We stepped in excited about having the best years of our lives only to find that it was a complete life test itself.
Having unrealistic expectations can be damaging.
This is a revelation of the unrealistic expectations of life at campus!
#1. You’ll be able to do it all
Getting to campus, we thought we'd have it all done; new experiences, communities, clubs, styles and a lot of explorations only to find hunger and academic responsibilities (course works, exams, assignments, group projects) starring at us.
But well, good time managers find time for extra-curricular activities and social life though not in the perfect way they expected.
Many decide to prioritize and guess what? They prioritize, rather 'forced by life to prioritize' on academics other than fun.
#2. You’re supposed to have the best time of your life
This is one of the most dangerous!! It's never that way for the biggest percentage of students. This expectation has only led to toxic comparisons with fellows, something that steals a lot of students' joy and concentration on higher priorities.
It's rather better to live an independent life and have a chance to understand yourself better.
Putting up an unrealistic expectation that your college life is going to be superb will only disappoint you when things don’t go the way you thought it would be.
So, it’s important that you don’t put pressure on yourself to be living your best life at campus.
#3. You’ll have a career right after college
On top of this, they even say good grades will get you a good job! Well it's true, but in reality, it doesn’t happen that way. Thousands of students graduating every year makes it difficult for graduates to stand out, even those with excellent grades.
One must learn earlier that their Network is their Net-worth and start working on this as early as day one on campus.
Expect no job to be handed out to you unless you're 'known'.
#4. Having your future all figured out
As a University student, the pressure to have everything sorted out for the future is huge. You’re expected to come up with a 5-year plan, hold leadership positions, have work experience in your field of interest and make big important decisions at such a young age.
The truth is, there’ll never be a point where you’ll have it all figured out.
Everything is just a learning process and you have no idea what experiences, opportunities and personal transformations you’ll go through and how they can affect what you want in life. Who knows, you might not even work in the field that you studied when you’re in college. And guess what? That’s totally okay!
Having goals and ambitions helps you move to the direction you want, it’s crucial to understand that your interests can change and that everyone’s journey to success is different and not linear. But that doesn’t make you any less successful than others.
